Divide Decimals by Tenths
Dividing Decimals: Learn
The procedure for the division of decimals is very similar to the division of whole numbers.
How to divide a decimal number by a one digit decimal number (e.g. 0.424 ÷ 0.8):
Place the divisor (0.8) before the division bracket and place the dividend (0.424) under it.
0.8 | 0 | . | 4 | 2 | 4 |
In this lesson, the divisors will all have decimal digits into the tenths. To simplify the problem, multiply both the divisor and dividend by 10 so that the divisor is not a decimal but a whole number. In other words move the decimal point one place to the right in both the divisor and dividend.
8 | 4 | . | 2 | 4 |
Bring the decimal point up directly above where it is in the dividend.
